Weird Fish Lulu Waterproof Jacket, £60

Lionel and I are having a stand-off. He likes to think he has the smartest coat in the village but, in my new waterproof jacket, I’m giving him a serious run in the style stakes. We’re at Westonbirt Arboretum, where he’s used to attracting a lot of attention but, I have to say, today the admiring glances are all coming my way.

weird-fishI’m sporting the Lulu waterproof jacket from Weird Fish. It’s not that we’re trying to co-ordinate or anything (gosh, imagine being one of those dog owners) but the bold red contrast against tasteful navy does complement Lionel’s scarlet coat rather well. I’ve always been a fan of Weird Fish’s slightly quirky clothing and the Lulu is gorgeous in a way that, let’s face it, most practical coats just aren’t.

A fully waterproof yet breathable jacket, it epitomises the way Weird Fish marries quality and comfort with style. With a dropped back hem for a flattering fit, it looks great and works exceedingly well as we plunge through one of the wettest autumns I can remember. The hood is strong, with no wired peak but a bungee cord adjuster that keeps it in place, and the fact it’s detachable, thanks to sturdy brass poppers, is a lovely bonus.

The zip is chunky and dependable and the velcro wrist adjusters are in line with the strong theme – the oversized detail is what makes the Lulu so attractive. The side pockets are deep, with poppers for extra security, while my favourite feature has to be the diagonal chest pocket, again with a popper fastening, which is ideal for a small phone or notebook. The jacket’s insubstantial weight also makes it easily popped into a bag and carried.

The striking red and navy patterned full body lining adds another splash of individuality to match the pretty branding on one sleeve, small but stand-out details which set this coat apart. I haven’t put it through its paces in severe conditions but have tested it in just about every other scenario – family strolls, early morning dog walks and popping to the shops – and it performs strongly, keeping me utterly dry and with great storage space for keys, phone, money and dog treats and bags.

But, back to that style. Now, I’m no fashionista but one of my pet peeves is the ‘mac and  handbag’ look – ladies, they just don’t go well together. The lovely thing with this jacket is it’s sophisticated enough to wear with jeans and smart boots, whether to the pub with friends or to meet clients. The £60 price tag is superb given its versatility in highly changeable weather; I’ve been wearing it pretty much every day since it arrived, for work, leisure and, of course, catching the eye of those not-so-secret admirers strolling about Westonbirt. Sorry Lionel, but that has to beat your coat, paws down.
